Fallow
04:20
|
|
||
After some good time lying
fallow, the fields considered
the use and goodness
of dew and moisture --
so I considered
the use and goodness
of everything
that I'd considered
gone and rotten,
but was just forgotten.
And now I'm back,
and now I'm ready
to return.
After some real time ringing
hollow, the thought, recurring,
changes key.
And like the thought did,
so I considered
the use and goodness
of changing key,
to full from hollow,
from the full-time hatred
of everything
that I'd considered
gone away.
And now it's back,
and now it's ready
to return.

Foam
03:01
|
|
||
I appreciated the quivering foam
my brother sent me on his cell phone.
I lay in bed for hours,
the morning held its power
over me.
Who put these sand dunes here,
and for whom? In my side view
I squint at the horizon;
the morning's jaundiced eye squints
back at me.
I should've come and met you on the beach.
Was my father right when he said,
"Maybe we are all just evil motherfuckers"?
I believe in people's power,
but not at this late hour,
personally.
I should've come and met you on the beach.

I Live In Fear
02:00
|
|
||
Who's that at my gate?
And are they coming for me?
And if we take our boot off their neck,
how much justice will they want?
I live in fear!
Do you hear that toddler whine?
It sounds like she's hungry to me,
and though my refrigerator is full,
better reach for my rifle.
I live in fear!

Horse trotting, feet not touching the ground:
head hanging, hooves just floating around.
Can't fool me, I see the pole holding the
Figurine up.
Looking
for my mother's open hand
in my father's fist
somewhere in this museum...
my sibling's open hand
on my little cheek...
But that was
years ago
and I'm much
older now
I can't be
fooled by such
childish things
as figurines.

The World
04:21
|
|
||
Maybe something bad will happen,
or maybe something good will happen.
Whatever it is,
I'll stick to it and own it.
I don't want another world -- I want this one.
Maybe something new will happen,
or maybe something old will repeat itself.
Whatever it is,
I'll stick to it and own it,
I'll cling to it and cleave to it.
I don't want another world -- I want this one.

Justice
04:17
|
|
||
I used to think
that justice --
justice --
was something you meet
with a mouth full of dirt
and a skull full of worms.
Better
to have never,
never been born
Now I think I know better:
justice is a dog biting back;
justice is my bleeding hand;
justice is my lonely walk home;
justice is me in your arms.
I used to think
that power
was something to fear
with blood on its mouth
and hate in its heart.
Stronger
just meant
more willing to hurt.
Now I think I know better:
power is us walking in hand;
power is us moving through pain;
power is my wound healing up;
power is you in my arms.

Rust
03:07
|
|
||
The way objects pass like hours,
with a face and sneering...
He bled on his pillow,
and now rested in it.
The sheets warm in morning...
pickled in the mattress...
suspended in them and
thinking like a fetus...
To roll over and see
ceiling fan unspinning,
shadowless in spring light,
flabby muscles ringing.
Rust as spirit color
rust as world entire
rusty metal faucet
drips rusty colored water.
Rust as spirit color
rusted-up and tired
must be something I ate --
could be wrongly wired.

Orange
03:32
|
|
||
The things you want and need aren't the same.
But if you want, I'll be an orange light for you.
The things you want and what I need aren't the same.
But if you want, I"ll peel an orange.
Give me your secret plant.
I'll feed it and water it,
I'll take good care for you --
I'll even play it classical music,
and, when you're ready to,
come home to me.
I'll be home
when you're ready
to come home to me.
The place you haunt and where I seek aren't the same.
But if you want, I'll peel an orange for you.
The things you want and what I need aren't the same.
But if you want, I'll be your orange.
Give me your favorite pet.
I'll walk it and feed it,
I'll groom it every day --
but come home to me!
I'll be home when you're ready to come home to me.

Space and Time
02:19
|
|
||
Space and time are each other's punishment,
and if you want to be, you're going to have to do.
And if you want to do a thing, you'll have to be one too.
And all I have found is wanting.
Cannot help but yank on the chain that keeps me here,
keep worrying the tether that keeps me from whatever
might be beyond
the end. The end.
